Postdoctoral Positions in Supernova Neutrino Physics – Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Neutrino Group

May 1, 2025

Job Description

Employer: Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Neutrino Group

Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Neutrino Group

Position Description

Two Postdoc positions are opening at the Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHEP, CAS), focusing on the neutrino astronomy.

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a large-scale, underground neutrino experiment located in Jiangmen, China, designed to address fundamental questions in neutrino physics and astrophysics. With a 20-kiloton liquid scintillator detector located 700 meters underground, JUNO aims to determine the neutrino mass ordering with high precision and study various astrophysical sources of neutrinos, including those from supernovae, the Sun, and Earth’s atmosphere. JUNO’s unprecedented sensitivity and scale also open up possibilities for multi-messenger astronomy, capturing signals from cosmic events like supernova explosions in real-time. The construction of the detector is at the final stage, and data-taking is expected to start in the summer of 2025.

IHEP is the leading institute for the JUNO collaboration which includes >700 collaborators from 72 institutions in 17 countries. Successful candidates will work in the neutrino group of the experimental physics division (EPD) at IHEP on one of the following topics:

• First Detection of Diffuse Supernova Neutrino Background

• Supernova Burst Neutrinos in the Multi-Messenger Era

• Numerical Simulation of Core-collapse Supernovae

IHEP values diversity and welcomes candidates from all backgrounds worldwide. Knowledge of the Chinese language is not required. We provide comprehensive logistical assistance for international candidates to help with relocation, living arrangements, and all other aspects of settling in Beijing.
The position is based in Beijing and comes with an internationally competitive annual salary of 300,000-500,000 Chinese Yuan before tax. The initial appointment will be made for two years, with a possible renewal of 1-2 years. Candidates are also encouraged to apply for research grants hosted by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation, or the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). Successful candidates after their postdoc can be promoted to tenure-track faculty at IHEP.

The selection of candidates for interviews will begin immediately and continue until the positions are filled. For further information about the position, please contact Prof. Yi Jia (yijia@ihep.ac.cn).
