Introduction to Gansu Agricultural University

Gansu Agricultural University (甘肃农业大学, website) is a university jointly established by the Ministry of Agriculture and the Gansu Provincial People’s Government, one of the top 100 universities in the central and western regions, and a high-level university in Gansu Province. The predecessor was the National Veterinary College, which was founded in Lanzhou in October 1946. In 1950, it was renamed Northwest Veterinary College; in 1951, it was renamed Northwest Animal Husbandry and Veterinary College; in 1958, it was merged with Gansu Agricultural College under preparation to establish Gansu Agricultural University.

Gansu Agricultural University is located in Anning District, Lanzhou City, covering an area of 1.65 million square meters and a construction area of 690,000 square meters. There are currently 24 colleges (Department of Teaching), 63 undergraduate majors, and 5 national specialties including animal medicine; 1 national key discipline (grass science), 1 key discipline of the Ministry of Agriculture, and 13 provincial levels Key disciplines; 5 post-doctoral research stations, 8 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points, 32 second-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points; 15 first-level discipline master’s degree authorization points, 69 second-level discipline master’s degree authorization points, 8 professional degree authorization categories; 1 national key laboratory cultivation base, 1 national experimental teaching demonstration center, 6 provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, provincial and ministerial joint construction and provincial key laboratories (engineering centers) 33 Each.

Gansu Agricultural University has been recruiting graduate students since 1953. It is the first batch of bachelor’s and master’s degree granting units in China’s universities and the second batch of doctoral degree granting units. At present, there are more than 16,700 undergraduate students and more than 2000 master and doctoral students. So far, more than 120,000 senior professionals have been trained for the country. Yang Ziheng, the first Chinese academician of the Royal Academy of Sciences, Shang Yongfeng and Chen Hualan, academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Nan Zhibiao, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, have emerged.

Since the “13th Five-Year Plan” period, the university has undertaken more than 1,200 research projects of various types, with a total funding of 320 million yuan. 116 research achievements have been awarded, including 66 provincial and ministerial awards, and 462 authorized patents. 174 monograph textbooks have been published. At present, the university undertakes more than 290 national key research projects such as the national key research and development plan and the national natural (social) science fund. A great deal of research results have been made in the fields of biotechnology, agricultural products processing and so on.

Gansu Agricultural University maintains academic exchanges with more than 50 universities and research institutions in the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, Russia, Japan, Egypt and other countries. Scholars from both sides visit each other, carry out scientific research collaborations and send teachers for further studies and study abroad. China and the United States have established the “Sino-American Grassland Animal Husbandry Sustainable Development Research Center”. The implementation of the “China-US 1 + 2 + 1 Talent Training Program” and other cooperative education programs have enabled our students to make full use of quality international education resources and enrich their experience.

During the 73 years of construction and development, Gansu Agricultural University provided strong intellectual support and talent guarantee for economic construction and social development in Gansu and western regions, and made important contributions to the development of higher agricultural education in China.
