Guangzhou University (GZHU), located in Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province, is a comprehensive university approved by the Ministry of Education, with a provincial and municipal system of operation. It is a key university in Guangdong Province, a university under the national “111 Plan”, and a university under the construction of Guangzhou High-level University.
The university was formed in 2000 by the merger of five colleges and universities, including Guangzhou Normal College, South China Construction College (West Campus), Guangzhou Institute of Education, the former Guangzhou University and Guangzhou Higher Normal College. The history of the original Guangzhou University dates back to 1927 when the private Guangzhou University was founded, the original Guangzhou College of Education was founded in 1953, the original Guangzhou Normal College was founded in 1958, the original South China Construction College (West College) was founded in 1984, and the original Guangzhou Higher Normal College was founded in 1985.
As of June 2022, the university has three campuses: University City, Guihuagang and Huangpu Research Institute/Graduate School, with a total campus area of 1,880 mu and a total construction area of 885,000 square meters; 30,043 full-time undergraduates and 6,951 master’s and doctoral students are enrolled. There are 3,248 faculty and staff on duty, including 2,515 professional and technical staff, 2,042 full-time teaching and research staff; there are 8 authorized academic degree doctoral programs and 2 authorized professional degree doctoral programs; 39 authorized academic degree master’s programs and 27 authorized professional degree master’s programs.
