Introduction to Northwest Normal University

Northwest Normal University (西北师范大学, website) is a key university jointly constructed by the People’s Government of Gansu Province and the Ministry of Education, and one of fourteen universities in the western region supported by the state. Its predecessor was the National Peiping Normal University, which originated from the Beijing Normal University Teachers’ College established in 1902. In 1912, it was changed to “National Beijing Normal University” and in 1923 it was changed to “National Beiping Normal University”. After the “July 7th” Incident in 1937, the National Beiping Normal University, the National Beiping University, and the Beiyang Institute of Technology that moved to the west simultaneously formed the Northwest United University. The National Beiping Normal University was reorganized into the Education College under the Northwest United University, and later changed to Normal university. In 1939, the Northwest Union University Teachers College was established independently, renamed the National Northwest Normal College, and moved to Lanzhou in 1941. After the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japan, the National Northwest Normal University continued to run schools in Lanzhou. At the same time, Beiping Normal University (now Beijing Normal University) was restored. Before 1958, the school was one of the 6 key universities in the country directly under the Ministry of Education. In 1958, it was placed under the leadership of Gansu Province and renamed Gansu Normal University. In 1981, it was renamed Northwest Normal University. In 1988 it was renamed Northwest Normal University.

Northwest Normal University has one national and local joint engineering laboratory, one national key humanities and social science research base, one national research institute, one national star creation world, two national teaching teams, and the Ministry of Education 1 laboratory, 2 innovation teams of the Ministry of Education, 3 research centers of the Ministry of Education, 6 key research bases of humanities and social sciences of provincial universities, 4 provincial key laboratories, 19 provincial research centers, and new type think tanks of provincial universities , 5 provincial innovation groups, 9 provincial engineering research centers (engineering laboratories), 1 provincial university science park, and 3 provincial international science and technology cooperation bases. Northwest Normal University has trained more than 240,000 students. The school enrolls students in 31 provinces (municipalities and autonomous regions) across the country and currently has a total of 35,501 students. Among them, there are 17,713 ordinary undergraduates, 422 doctoral students, 7972 postgraduates, 415 foreign students, and 8,979 continuing education students.
