The Sichuan Fine Arts Institute (四川美术学院, website), which has been running for 79 years, is a predecessor of the Sichuan Provincial Art College established in 1940 by returning art educators such as Li Youxing and Shen Fuwen. Sichuan Fine Arts Institute is the only higher art college in Southwest China. It currently has Huangpiping Campus in Jiulongpo District and Huxi Campus in Shapingba District University City, covering a total area of 1,200 acres. In November 2018, the school selected a site of 150 acres in Liangjiang New District, Chongqing City, and established the International Design College (Art Port of Western China).

The school now has the School of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy, School of Plastic Arts, School of Arts and Humanities, School of Art Education, School of Film and Animation, School of Architecture and Environmental Art, School of Design, School of Experimental Art, School of Public Art. Since the beginning of the new century, school education has achieved rapid development. In recent years, the university has applied for more than 100,000 undergraduates and more than 3,000 graduate students. The school currently has 628 full-time teachers, 7,550 full-time undergraduate, graduate and international students.

Sichuan Fine Arts Institute has four first-level disciplines in the fields of fine arts, design, drama and film, and art theory, all of which accept graduate students. During the “Thirteenth Five-Year Plan” period, four first-level disciplines were listed as key disciplines in Chongqing for support and construction. Among them, fine arts and design science were listed as first-class disciplines in Chongqing for support and construction. The school has 22 undergraduate enrollment majors, of which painting, sculpture, animation, art design, and industrial design are national specialty specialty construction sites, and fine arts, design, drama, and film and television are Chongqing’s specialty disciplines.
