Sichuan International Studies University (SISU), located in Shapingba District, Chongqing, is a full-time general university approved by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China and subordinate to Chongqing Municipal People’s Government. It is one of the first four institutions of higher education specializing in foreign languages.
The school adheres to the fine school spirit of “unity, diligence, rigor and truthfulness”, carries forward the school motto of “the sea is full of rivers, the learning of Chinese and foreign countries”, and forms the characteristics of “international orientation, foreign language common core, diversified development The school has developed the characteristics of “international orientation, foreign language co-core and diversified development” and explored a path of “connotation development, quality first, Sino-foreign cooperation and classification training”.
The university has now developed into a multidisciplinary foreign language university with foreign language and literature as the main disciplines and literature, education, economics, management, law, art and other disciplines in a coordinated development, and has a complete system of doctoral education, master’s education, undergraduate education, international student education, continuing education and intensive training in multiple forms and levels. The university also has a postdoctoral research station for foreign languages and literature, and has established academic journals such as Foreign Languages and English Studies. The school has become an important base for training foreign language and foreign-related talents as well as research on foreign language and culture, foreign economic and trade, and international issues in the southwest region.
History
Sichuan International Studies University (SISU) was founded in 1950 under the kind care and guidance of Deng Xiaoping, Liu Boxing, He Long and other old proletarian revolutionaries. In 2013, it was renamed as Sichuan Foreign Language University and was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council in the same year. In 2013, it was renamed as Sichuan University of Foreign Languages, and in the same year it was approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council as a doctoral degree granting unit.
Campus Environment
The campus is a mini mountain city in a big mountain city, with the back of Gloria and the face of Jialing, and the campus extends in a staircase towards Gloria Mountain, with green trees, elegant environment and beautiful scenery.
Academic Majors
The university has a multi-level system of full-time undergraduate, master’s and doctoral education, with 22 teaching units, one affiliated middle school and one affiliated elementary school. The university offers 51 undergraduate majors, including 24 foreign language majors (22 foreign languages), and enrolls undergraduate students in 30 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the central government, with more than 17,000 full-time students.
The university is mainly engaged in foreign language and literature, and has a coordinated development of literature, economics, management, law, education, philosophy, art and other disciplines. The university has 1 primary discipline authorized for doctoral degree, including 13 secondary disciplines; 5 primary disciplines authorized for master’s degree, including 49 secondary disciplines; 10 professional master’s degree authorized points, covering 49 professional master’s degree authorized fields; the primary discipline of foreign language and literature has been approved as a postdoctoral research station. Scientific Research
The university has built 3 provincial key research bases of humanities and social sciences, 3 cultivation/record bases of country and regional studies of the Ministry of Education, and 2 Chongqing 2011 Collaborative Innovation Center. The school’s academic journal Foreign Languages is a national “core journal of Chinese foreign languages”, and English Studies is a CSSCI source journal. The university has established regional and country research institutes, the Institute of Contemporary China, the BRICS Institute, the Chongqing Institute of International Strategy, the Institute of Contemporary International Discourse System, the Chongqing International Education Development Research Center, the Chongqing Education Rule of Law Research Center and other applied research platforms, which have produced a number of valuable and highly visible research results. The university is the president unit of the second-level societies of national society organizations such as the China Foreign Language Interface Research Association, the Chinese Language Education Research Association, the Chinese and Western Language and Philosophy Research Association, and the Chinese Society of Cognitive Communication.
International Cooperation
The university has established inter-university cooperation and exchange relations with more than 100 universities and institutions in more than 30 countries or regions, and has established two Sino-Australian Business English and Sino-French Logistics Management programs approved by the Ministry of Education. There is one Confucius Classroom in Ecuador. In recent years, the university has been actively developing various types of undergraduate and doctoral talents training, teacher training, scientific research cooperation and overseas intellectual attraction, receiving more than 400 international students, more than 70 long-term and short-term foreign teachers, more than 100 teachers and more than 600 students annually. The university is a member of the Global Association of Foreign Language Universities (GAFSU) and a full member of the Association of Universities of French-speaking Countries (AUF), and has established foreign-related educational and cultural exchange institutions such as Goethe Language Center, Cervantes Language Center, Italian Language Center, Russian Language Center and Belarusian Research Center in cooperation with foreign governments and educational institutions.
Operating Conditions
The university covers an area of 71 hectares and has complete teaching facilities, including multimedia classrooms, speech labs, simultaneous interpretation labs and translation labs in the southwest. At present, the university has more than 110 teaching laboratories, and has built three experimental teaching demonstration centers in Chongqing, namely the Foreign Language Experimental Center, the Comprehensive Experimental Center for Communication Skills, and the Foreign Affairs Experimental Center; the Foreign Language Experimental Center has nearly 4,000 seats, an area of about 10,000 square meters, and equipment worth about 30 million yuan. The university library now has a total collection of 1.3 million paper books in 22 languages, 1.85 million electronic books, 64,460 electronic journals totaling 1 million copies, and 99 databases. In recent years, the university has actively introduced 93 Chinese and foreign language databases, including China Periodicals and Master’s Theses Database (CNKI), Super Star Discovery System, GALE Reference Tool, PQDT Dissertation, etc.; it has built its own databases with German language characteristics and databases with CD-ROM publishing system, and built a literature resource guarantee system combining paper and electronic literature, physical and virtual collections.
