Introduction to Southwest Petroleum University

Southwest Petroleum University (西南石油大学, website) is the second petroleum undergraduate college created by New China. It is a co-established central and local institution of higher learning mainly managed by the Sichuan Provincial People’s Government. In 2013, the school was selected into the “National Midwest University Foundation Capability Construction Project” and became one of the 100 universities selected for the project. In September 2017, it was selected as the country’s first batch of “double first-class” world-class discipline construction universities.

In the mid-to-late 1950s, China ’s oil industry was lagging behind, far from meeting the needs of national construction, and aroused great concern from the party and the state. Chairman Mao Zedong visited Sichuan Longchang Gas Mine in person. The General Secretary of the Secretariat Deng Xiaoping personally presided over the exploration and development of Sichuan oil and gas fields. In March 1958, three exploratory wells located in Dongguan, Nan’an, Wu’an, and Suining, Yinging, spewed out high-yield oil flow, which shocked the whole country. General Yu Qiuli, Minister of Petroleum Industry, sat in Nanchong and started the Sichuan Petroleum Conference. In order to accelerate the development of Sichuan’s petroleum and natural gas resources, and to develop technical leaders for the development of petroleum and natural gas industries in the Southwest Cooperative Zone, the state has decided to establish a second petroleum university. The school’s site is located in Nanchong, a city in the north of Sichuan, where the Sichuan Petroleum Battle Command is located.

In August 1958, the Ministry of Petroleum Industry recruited 643 first-time students in Chengdu in advance, and then appointed Comrade Ma Zai, director of the Infrastructure Construction Department, to lead a group of young experts and cadres to Nanchong to plan the establishment of the college. On September 20, the Ministry of Petroleum Industry in conjunction with the Ministry of Education reportedly approved the establishment of the Sichuan Petroleum Institute with the consent of the State Council. Since then, along with the development of China’s oil and gas industry, the school has begun the practice of breaking the school by having students first and then building schools.

In July 1970, the university was renamed Southwest Petroleum Institute with the approval of the State Council. In March 2000, the school was transferred to Sichuan Province, which was jointly built by the central and local governments, and was mainly managed by the Sichuan Provincial People’s Government. Approved by the Ministry of Education in 2003, the school was upgraded to a university and officially changed its name to Southwest Petroleum University in December 2005. On November 1, 2018, the Sichuan Provincial People’s Government, China National Petroleum Corporation, China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation, and China National Offshore Oil Corporation signed a strategic cooperation framework for building a world-class discipline construction university (Southwest Petroleum University) protocol.

Southwest Petroleum University began to recruit master degree students in 1978, and was awarded the doctorate degree in 1986. In 1988, the oil and gas field development engineering (United Petroleum Machinery Engineering) became the first national key discipline. In 1989, the State Key Laboratory of Oil and Gas Reservoir Geology and Development Engineering was approved for construction. A post-doctoral research mobile station was established in 1991.

After more than 60 years of construction, Southwest Petroleum University has developed into a university focusing on engineering, multidisciplinary coordinated development, prominent petroleum and natural gas advantages, and distinctive characteristics. The major of petroleum majors is at the leading level in the country.

Southwest Petroleum University has 19 teaching colleges (departments) and 1 engineering training center. The disciplines cover 8 disciplines: science, engineering, management, economics, literature, law, education, and art. There are 75 undergraduate majors (including 69 undergraduate admissions majors in 2019) and 8 national specialty programs. Points, 16 specialty specialties of Sichuan Province, 1 national college students’ cultural quality education base, and 11 Sichuan undergraduate talent training bases. There are 5 first-level disciplines with PhD authorized disciplines, 29 second-level disciplines with PhD authorized disciplines, 20 first-level disciplines with master-level authorized disciplines, 88 second-level disciplines with master-level authorized disciplines, and 12 types of master’s degree programs (including electronics (Information, Machinery, Materials and Chemicals, Resources and Environment, Energy and Power, Civil and Water Conservancy, MBA, Master of Translation, Engineering Management, Master of Law, Master of Social Work, Master of Applied Statistics) and 8 college teachers working on-the-job for master’s degree authorized subjects . There are five post-doctoral research stations, one national “double first-class” construction discipline, one first-level national key discipline, three second-level national key disciplines, and 15 provincial and ministerial key disciplines. There are 2 national teaching teams, 3 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 2 national virtual simulation experimental teaching centers, and 7 provincial teaching teams. There are 80 scientific and technological innovation teams at the university level or above, of which: the Ministry of Education “Changjiang Scholars and Innovation Team Development Plan” supports 2 innovation teams (including cultivation), and the Sichuan Province “Young Technology Innovation Research Team Funding Program” supports 10 innovation teams 1 Sichuan Philosophy and Social Science Research Team, 18 Sichuan Provincial “Provincial University Scientific and Technological Innovation Team Construction Plan” funded innovation teams, and 49 Southwest Petroleum University youth science and technology innovation teams (including cultivation). The first-level discipline of petroleum and natural gas engineering was rated A + in the fourth round of national discipline evaluation, ranking first in the country. The post-doctoral research station of petroleum and natural gas engineering was named “National Excellent Post-doctoral Research Mobile Station” in 2005. At present, there are 36942 full-time students (including part-time master’s degree students), including 30068 ordinary undergraduate students, 5446 master’s degree students, 883 doctoral degree students, and 543 foreign students. In addition, there are 1,400 postgraduates studying for a master’s degree.

Southwest Petroleum University has a national university science park. The science and technology park is a national university student science and technology entrepreneurship practice base, a post-doctoral innovation practice base in Sichuan province, a college student entrepreneurship demonstration base in Chengdu, and a Chengdu SME incubation base. Southwest Petroleum University has two campuses, Chengdu and Nanchong, with a total campus area of more than 3,000 acres; 35,600 teaching and research equipment (sets and pieces), with a total value of 661 million yuan; 2.075 million volumes of paper books and 44.741 electronic books Million volumes.
