Tonghua Normal University (通化师范学院, website) is the only provincial undergraduate college in the southeast of Jilin Province. It is located in Tonghua City, at the foot of Changbai Mountain, along the Yalu River and on the border between China and North Korea. According to the needs of the development of education, Tonghua Normal School was changed to Tonghua Teachers College in 1958. The history of Tonghua Normal School can be traced back to the Liaodong Provincial (Tonghua) Sixth Normal School established in 1929. In 1978, Tonghua Teachers College was officially upgraded to a regular undergraduate college with the approval of the Ministry of Education and renamed Tonghua Teachers College. The school always adhering to the school motto of Chongdeguangye, and advancing with the times, adheres to the simple educational philosophy, inherits the Jingyu spirit, builds and educates people, and serves the school running characteristics of Changbai Mountain. The school’s school running strategy highlights the advantages of “one soul, one teacher, one mountain, one city, one family, one history”, and has made important contributions to local economic construction and social development. In 2007, the school successfully passed the evaluation of the undergraduate teaching level of the Ministry of Education. In 2016, the school successfully passed the review and evaluation of the undergraduate teaching work of the Ministry of Education. In 2019, the school was rated as a provincial model for transformation and development and a pilot university for comprehensive reform of “three comprehensive education” in Jilin Province.

Tonghua Normal University covers an area of 490,000 square meters, with a building area of 230,000 square meters. Tonghua Normal University has established friendly and cooperative relations with 52 colleges and education institutions outside the country (overseas), and has carried out exchange and cultivation of undergraduates in various forms such as exchange students, 2 + 2, 3 + 1, short-term exchanges and paid internships. Tonghua Normal University actively promotes school-land cooperation, has signed school-land cooperation agreements with Huinan, Ji’an, Liuhe and other places, established the first rural revitalization college in Jilin Province, and implemented the “Double Hundred and Double Progress” plan.
