Tongji University (Tongji for short) is a comprehensive university located in Shanghai, China, and is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China. “It is also a member of the Alliance for University Excellence, the Global Partnership for Environment and Sustainability (GUPES), the International Consortium of Design and Art Schools (Cumulus), the Academic Consortium for the 21st Century (AC21), and the Tongji-Berkeley Engineering Consortium (TBC). Tongji-Berkeley Alliance (TBA) and the Association of Russian and Chinese Engineering Universities (ASRTU).
Tongji University was founded in 1907 as the Devon Medical College, later renamed the Tongji Devon Medical College. In 1912, it merged with the soon to be founded Tongji Devon Engineering College and was renamed the Tongji Devon Medical and Engineering College; in 1923, it was officially named Tongji University; in 1927, it was established as the National Tongji University, one of the first seven national universities in China; in 1949, it was renamed Tongji University.
Tongji University currently has 38 faculties (departments) and secondary institutions, 7 affiliated hospitals and 5 affiliated secondary schools; there are more than 17,000 full-time undergraduates, 13,000 master’s degree students and nearly 5,000 doctoral students. There are thousands of foreign students; the university covers an area of about 3,850 acres; and there are more than 4 million paperback books.
According to the 2021 QS World University Rankings and the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, Tongji University is ranked ninth and 16th in China respectively.
