Wuxi Vocational Institute of Commerce

Wuxi Vocational Institute of Commerce was a provincial public institute founded in 1965. It is a full-time higher education institute aiming at cultivating high-quality talents with technical skills for modern service industry. The institute now has almost 14,000 full-time students and more than 800 faulty members. Since its establishment, the institute has taken the responsibility of providing vocational education to the satisfaction of the people and has trained many high-quality technical talents. In 2007 and 2011, the institute passed with excellent results the evaluation by the Ministry of Education on talent cultivation in higher vocational colleges; in 2008, it was identified as the first batch of model higher vocational institutes in Jiangsu Province; in 2012, it was listed as the first batch of pilot unit for modern vocational education system construction in Jiangsu Province; in 2017, it was selected as the construction unit of high-level higher vocational institutes in Jiangsu Province and ranked the first in the province and the fourth in the country in terms of innovation & development impact among national higher vocational colleges; in 2019, it was rated as the national high-quality higher vocational institute and selected as the construction unit of national Double High-Level plan. The institute has been honored as one of the Top 50 Higher Vocational Colleges in China and Top 50 Schools with Global Influence, and has been awarded as the national Defense Education Model School, the national Model Campus for the Digitalization of Vocational Colleges, the Demonstration Unit of Energy Efficient Public Institution at the national level, the National May Fourth Red Flag Youth League Committee, the Civic Campus of Jiangsu Province, the Model Smart Campus in Jiangsu Province. It’s also the three-time winner of the “Cradle Award for Highly Skilled Talents granted by Jiangsu Provincial People’s Government. In 2019, representatives of the school were received by General Secretary Xi Jinping, Premier Li Keqiang and other Party and State leaders. In the 2019-2020 Wushulian University Ranking, the institute was ranked the 15th place in terms of its overall strength among higher education institutions nationwide.

Under the firm leadership of the Party, the institute has vigorously implemented projects to solidify the development of the Party, continuously deepened institutional reform, and formed a governance system featuring Led by the Party Committee, run by the principals, taught by the professors and managed by the people, which has continued to invigorate the school.

The college boasts many competitive majors, with one national high-level disciplines group, six national core majors, two majors sponsored by the central government, four disciplines groups selected for high-level development in Jiangsu Province, 18 projects selected to pilot the “1+X” model mechanism by the Ministry of Education. More than 10 standards for national majors, curriculum and vocational skills were made by the institute. 13 textbooks were selected as the “13th Five-Year Plan” national planning textbooks for vocational education, six courses were rated as national high-quality courses (high-quality online open). The school also hosted and participated in the construction of more than 10 national teaching resources projects.

Over the years, the institute has turned out many talents. It was selected by the Ministry of Education as the first pilot unit of modern apprenticeship system and has successfully passed the evaluation. It has held the National Vocational College Skills Competition for 6 consecutive years, winning 30 first prizes in the competition, and 7 special prizes and first prizes in the National and Provincial College Challenge Cup Competition, 1 first prize and 3 second prizes of National Teaching Achievements Award. In 2020, the institute won 2 gold medals in the 6th China International Internet+ Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition.

The institute has achieved remarkable results in the integration of industry and education, leading the formation of the Industry Education Alliance by National Business Vocational Education Group and China New Business Practice Education, and the Industry Education Alliance of National Practice Education. It has built 5 training bases funded by the central and provincial governments, 3 national production training bases, 1 national collaborative innovation center, and 3 provincial training platforms (integrated platforms) for the integration of industry and education. 2 projects have been selected for the China “Double Hundred Plan for School-Enterprise Cooperation”. Jiangsu Business Vocational Education Group was selected as the first batch of units for the development of National Demonstration Group.

The teachers are well-qualified, with more than 95% of them being the “Double Qualified Teachers”. There are 2 national training bases for Double Qualified Teachers, 1 national master studio, 2 national teaching teams, and nearly 50 teachers with titles such as “Teaching Masters”, “Social Science Talents” and “Youth Blue Project Talents” of Jiangsu Province. There are 12 teachers who are members of the Teaching Supervisory Committee, one teacher who is the national master craftsman, and one teacher who have won the first prize in the national informatization teaching competition for 3 consecutive years.

The Institute is the first higher vocational college in China to establish an overseas joint stock college – Sihanoukville College of Commerce and Industry in Cambodia, an application-oriented school for undergraduate study. Representatives from China and Cambodia attended the signing ceremony of the tripartite vocational education cooperation between the university, the Ministry of Labor of Cambodia and Sihanoukville Special Administrative Region. The college was selected as the “Education Base for International Students in Cambodia” by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of Cambodia. It was also listed as one of the Asian Cooperation Fund projects jointly established by the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Finance. Besides, the college was one of the first batch of “China-ASEAN Higher Vocational Institutions Cooperation Projects with Characteristics” under the “China-ASEAN Flagship Program for Stronger Cooperation among Two Hundred Vocational Schools”, and a provincial key project of the “Belt and Road” initiative.

There are many highlights in the cultural activities on campus. We have choreographed the first original dance drama featuring Wuxi merchants – “Wuxi Merchant Braving the Wind and Rain” and won the project of “The Introduction of High Art to Schools in Jiangsu Province”. The school has been awarded the second prize for three consecutive years for outstanding achievements in cultural construction in higher institutions by the Ministry of Education. The institute is also one of the first batch of intangible cultural heritage research bases in Jiangsu Province, the intangible cultural heritage education demonstration base of national vocational colleges, the demonstration base of traditional skills inheritance, the demonstration base of “one school, one production” campus culture brand in vocational colleges by the Ministry of Education, and the first prize winner of the National College Art Exhibition.

As we embark on a new journey in the new era, the institute will firmly uphold Xi Jinping’s thought of socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era, adhere to the fundamental task of cultivating people with moral integrity, pursue unwaveringly the principle of quality education, and deepen reform and innovation to promote development. Based in Wuxi, we aim to serve the Yangtze River Delta region and other places at home and abroad. We will strive to build a new ecology of digital business vocational education, integrate and cultivate innovative and outstanding talents in new business disciplines, and build a world-class business vocational institute with Chinese characteristics that will spearhead reform and support development. We will make great endeavors to provide strong talent and intellectual support to build a new Wuxi that is strong, rich, beautiful and high, serve Jiangsu’s “six high-quality” development and “the belt and road” initiative, and contribute to the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta and other national strategies. 2）School of International Education

Open-minded, the College of International Education has adhered to the policy of seeking “cooperative management, cooperative education, cooperative employment and cooperative development”. Upholding the philosophy of “improving education quality by innovation, reform, cooperation and specialties, we have actively expanded international education cooperation and exchange, explored the mode of joint cultivation of international talents, introduced high-quality educational resources from abroad, and scored remarkable achievements in the areas of cooperation in education, international faculty team-building, and training of students with global competence.

Since 2005, the school has carried out 8 cooperative programs with foreign institutions in Canada, Korea, Malaysia and Singapore. These programs include e-commerce, Business Administration, CNC technology, microelectronics technology, automobile application technology, computer application technology, and hotel management and accounting. We have cultivated many application-oriented professionals with global vision, professional knowledge and vocational skills. Some of the best, with unremitting efforts, have completed their undergraduate, master or doctoral studies in famous universities abroad and become excellent experts in their respective professional fields. Since 2006, the school has actively promoted faculty exchange with foreign institutions and has sent more than 600 outstanding teachers to study abroad. The school has signed cooperation and exchange agreements with higher education institutions in Malaysia, England, Australia, Canada, Singapore, Korea, Germany, Taiwan and Macau SAR, forging ahead and paving the way for the internationalization strategy of the Institute.

In active response to the Belt and Road initiative, the school has provided talents and services for enterprises who seek development abroad. The school has worked with Hongdou Group Cambodia Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone Co., Ltd. to set up the training center of Cambodia Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone, providing free language and vocational skills training for the employees of the enterprises in the Special Economic Zone. A total of 70,000 people has been trained, which has played a great role in improving the vocational skills of the employees and the productivity of the enterprises in the Special Economic Zone. In 2018, the project of “China-Cambodia Government-School-Enterprise Cooperation in Promoting Vocational Education” launched by our institute was awarded the Distinctive Cooperation Project of China-ASEAN Higher Education Institutions” by China Education Association for International Exchange. The Action Plan of “Jiangsu Province’s Participation in the Belt and Road Initiative” clearly states that Wuxi Vocational Institute of Commerce has set up a language center in Sihanoukville Industrial Zone, Cambodia. Our school was awarded “Top 50 Colleges of International Influence” for three consecutive years.

The School of International Education continues to improve the education of international students, promote the internationalization of the institute and enrich the diversity of campus culture. Since 2008, the School of International Education has accepted more than 380 international students from Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Kenya and other countries to participate in short-term training programs. Since 2015, the institute has enrolled nearly 170 international students from Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Indonesia, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and other countries from the Belt and Road regions, ranking the top among vocational colleges in the province. Our institute has been awarded the model school of “Study in Jiangsu” and the “Education Base for International Students from Cambodia” by the Ministry of Education of Cambodia.
