Introduction to Xiangtan University
Founded in 1958, Xiangtan University (XTU, website) is a comprehensive national key university initiated by Comrade Mao Zedong. On September 10 of the same year, Comrade Mao Zedong personally wrote the name of Xiangtan University and kindly asked that “Xiangtan university must be run well”. In 1974, Deng Xiaoping, Li Xiannian and other central leading comrades approved the resumption of Xiangtan University. In 1978, the University was determined by the State Council as one of the 16 comprehensive key universities of Arts, science and technology. In 1981, the University became one of the first batch of master’s degree authorization units in China. Since the resumption of the school, party and state leaders such as Hua Guofeng, Jiang Zemin and Li Peng have attached great importance to the construction and development of the school. On September 6, 2018, General Secretary Xi Jinping gave important instructions to the school, hoping that Xiangtan University will take root in the hometown of great people and strive to make the school better and more distinctive.
Since its establishment, Xiangtan University has steadily improved its comprehensive running strength and core competitiveness. It ranks 43rd in the times higher education 2019 world university ranking, and has become one of the few domestic universities that simultaneously enter the authoritative international university rankings such as the and USNEWS. The university is jointly established by the people’s Government of Hunan Province and the Ministry of education, as well as by the people’s Government of Hunan Province and the State Administration of science, technology and industry for national defense.
The university has graduate school and 20 colleges and teaching departments, covering 9 disciplines including literature, history, philosophy, science, engineering, economics, management, law and art. The ESI of 4 disciplines including chemistry, material science, engineering and mathematics ranks in the top 1% of universities and scientific research institutions in the world, and 7 disciplines rank in the world-class disciplines of software in 2018. At present, there are 3 national key disciplines, 5 domestic first-class construction disciplines, 10 domestic first-class cultivation disciplines and 4 national defense characteristic disciplines in Hunan Province; there are 15 first-class discipline doctoral programs, 31 first-class discipline master programs, 13 master’s degree categories and 15 post doctoral research flow stations; there are 9 disciplines ranking the top 10% in China, 11 national characteristic disciplines, and national professional comprehensive One reform pilot major, eight of which have passed the national engineering education professional certification.
The university has 2 national and local joint engineering laboratories, 1 national and local joint engineering research center, 1 national and international science and technology cooperation base; 2 key research bases of Humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of education, 1 research base of China’s red tourism innovation and development of the National Tourism Administration, 3 key laboratories of the Ministry of education, 2 engineering research centers of the Ministry of education; 1 province and ministry jointly build collaborative innovation Center, three “2011 collaborative innovation centers” of Hunan Province and two characteristic professional think tanks of Hunan Province; four innovation teams of the Ministry of education, four innovation research groups of self science fund of Hunan Province, three innovation teams of high-level talents gathering project in Hunan Province and seven innovation teams of science and technology in Colleges and universities of Hunan Province; it is the first batch of national patent collaborative application pilot units and the first batch of national intellectual property information services in Colleges and universities Heart.
At present, the school has 1488 full-time teachers, and the proportion of teachers with senior titles or doctorates is more than 75%; the number of teachers with overseas study experience is 25%, and the average academic level of teachers in 2018 ranks the 80th in China. It has gathered 4 academicians of the Chinese Academy of engineering, 4 candidates for the “ten thousand talents plan”, 6 Yangtze River scholars, 5 winners of the national outstanding young scholars and excellent young scholars fund, 7 national candidates for the “one million talents project”, 3 national model teachers, 9 national excellent teachers, 4 national famous teachers, 2 winners of the Feng Kang scientific computing award, 1 talent of “four one batch” in the national publicity and culture system A large number of high-level teachers and scientific research teams, including 1 national excellent scientific and technological worker, 1 national intellectual property leader, 1 national patent information leader, 52 experts enjoying special government allowance of the State Council.
In recent years, the university has made outstanding achievements in national projects, among which the number of national social science fund projects ranks among the top 25 universities in China; the number of papers included in SCI and EI and the number of international citations of papers rank around 80 in Universities in China; the number of SCI and EI papers published ranks the first in Colleges and universities of Hunan Province for five consecutive years; the number of reprinted materials and comprehensive index of National People’s Congress of social science papers are advanced 3% of the top universities in China; 5 think tanks were selected into the first batch of China’s think tank index list (ctti). The scientific research achievements have won more than 100 awards at or above the provincial level, including the national science and technology progress award, the excellent scientific research achievement award of the Ministry of education, the science and technology award of Hunan Province, and the excellent social science achievement award of Hunan Province. It has established academician workstation, Innovation Research Institute and other high-level production, learning and research bases, signed more than 1300 production, learning and research cooperation projects in the past five years, and applied for nearly 2500 patents.
At present, the school has 37057 full-time students, including 6770 doctoral and master degree students. It has three national experimental teaching demonstration centers, the first batch of national excellent legal talent education and training bases, the national talent training model innovation experimental area, and the National College Students’ cultural quality education base. It is the implementation unit of the “National College Students’ innovative experiment plan”, the first batch of national innovation and entrepreneurship education reform demonstration universities, and the typical experience universities for graduates’ employment. Since the establishment of the University, nearly 310000 graduates have been cultivated and a large number of excellent alumni have emerged, which has made important contributions to the national construction and social progress.
The University’s influence in the world and at home is expanding day by day. It has built cooperation and exchange platforms with nearly 60 universities and scientific research institutions in more than 20 countries, such as the United States, the United Kingdom and Japan, and carried out more than 30 international cooperation training projects; it has built Confucius Institute at the University of Leon in Spain and at the University of McRae in Uganda. The university is selected by the Chinese side in the “20 + 20 cooperation plan of Chinese and African universities” of the Ministry of education.
