Introduction to Zhejiang University of Finance and Economics Dongfang College
Dongfang College (website) is an affiliated college of Zhejiang University of Finance and Economics (ZUFE) in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province of China. ZUFE is a state owned university under Department of Finance, Zhejiang province, which prepares staff candidates for the Department and Finance. Dongfang College was established in 1999 as an independent institution from ZUFE to allow the strategic expansion setting forth for the university. While faculty and academic resources are shared between ZUFE and Dongfang, Dongfang is independently responsible for its program offering and operation. Since then, Dongfang has become a renowned pioneer college on course reform, program development, recruitment strategy, community service and international development.
In August 2010, Dongfang College moved from downtown Hangzhou to its new campus in Haining, a suburban northeast of Hangzhou. The new campus has 162 acres of acquired land, equipped with modern facilities and has much more potential to grow. Dongfang College currently has 9600 students and 600 faculty and staff.

Dongfang College is in Haining City, a suburb of Hangzhou sitting at the north of Hangzhou Bay, and about 40 minutes car ride from downtown Hangzhou.
The geographic ordinate of Hangzhou is approximately 30°16′ north, 120°12′ east, which is typically subtropical. Blessed with the nature, it has clear distinction of four seasons with plenty of sunshine and rainfall through the year, as well as enjoyable temperature. All of this has made this city comfortable to live, work and study in. Moreover, it is endowed with rich tourist resources, such as the West Lake, which has been nominated as UNESCO heritage in 2011.
Economically, Hangzhou is situated at the south wing of the Yangtze River Delta, where boasts the maximum GDP in China and has been recognized as the region with the biggest potential of economic development It is not only the capital of Zhejiang Province working as the center of politics, economy, science, education, and culture of the province, but also a key central city in Yangtze River Delta and a traffic hub in Southeast China. Also, as a main national tourist city carrying a long and significant history, and a vice provincial level city confirmed by the State Council, Hangzhou is renowned as “Paradise on Earth”, “Cultural State”, “Home of Silk”, “Tea Capital” and “Town of Fish and Rice”.
Dongfang College focuses on providing students with the practical skills and knowledge that are necessary to be successful in the 21st century. Dongfang consistently provides students the highest quality, advanced technology central education. Dongfang also constantly anticipates the ever-changing needs of students, community and society at global level.
Innovation and creativity are the focus of Dongfang’s student developments. To date, 258 students of Dongfang College have been honored for 149 provincial or national awards, plus 2 international awards. Students also published 151 academic papers, won the championship of provincial ERP Contest, and the second prize of English language contest of CCTV 2012.
Dongfang acts as a ‘connector’ between the college and area businesses, non-profit organizations, social service agencies and local governments. We work with these organizations to develop meaningful ‘real-world’ experiences for students with a wide range of majors and interests as well as academic-business link to address the issues that we are facing in the world. In turn, the students’ and teachers’ hard work helps these organizations to grow and prosper.
Inheriting the academic philosophy ‘Academic Freedom and Innovative Development’ of Yangshan Academy built in 1375, Yangshan Forum, co-held annually by Dongfang College and municipal government, adds something new to the tradition. The forum provides a focus for discussion of national and international research fronts in economics, finance and management; a round table meeting that facilitates collaborations among academic units, area business and local government to further their objectives for education and research, business opportunity and local wellbeing.

The city of Haining (City Panorama) is situated in the northeastern part of Zhejiang Province, on the southern tip of the Yangtze River Delta. It is located 125 kilometers west of Shanghai (30 mins by high speed rail), and some 60 kilometers (15 mins by high speed rail) east of the city of Hangzhou. To the south of Haining lies the famed Qiantang River. Haining is also home to many high level universities including the International Campus of Zhejiang University and ZUFE Dongfang College.
Haining attracts the attention of travelers, owing, in particular, to the spectacular annual tides that rush up the Qiantang River. Each year, thousands of tourists from around the world flock to Haining to watch the famous tide bore. Tidal bores occur about 120 days a year in Haining. The International Qiantang River Tidal Bore Watching Festival is held each year in response to the increasing popularity of this recurring event. The festival takes place on the 18th day of the eighth lunar month.
Other sights in Haining worthy of a visit include Haining Culture Street, where you can see ancient buildings dating from the Ming (Ce 1368-1644) and Qing (CE 1644-1911) Dynasties; and the Ming Dynasty period home, the Chen Family Residence.
