About the Portland Institute, Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications
The Portland Institute Nanjing (PIN) is a joint partnership of Portland State University in Oregon, USA and the Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications in Nanjing, China. Established in 2019, the Institute offers programs in Electrical and Computer Engineering at undergraduate and graduate levels and has a current enrolment of approximately 1,200 students. The Institute draws on the expertise of faculty from PSU and NJUPT to jointly design high quality international degree programs. We are committed to cultivating professionals who are well prepared to engage in global collaboration, research, and innovation in the field of international electronic information engineering science.
About the position
The Portland Institute is seeking applications for a campus Academic Coordinator to support operations in Nanjing. The role will have oversight of PSU’s academic affairs in the Institute, providing instructional support to faculty and students, acting as point of contact between NJUPT and PSU, and maintaining external relations locally and throughout China. The coordinator will be supervised by PSU’s Associate Dean for International Partnerships, who also serves as PIN Vice Dean, and will work closely with the Portland based Education Specialist. In addition, this position will work with the Institute’s Dean’s office in Nanjing, and the International Program Office and ECE department leadership in PSU’s Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science.
Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Supporting Teaching and Learning
Support all faculty teaching in Nanjing in the development of effective teaching practices
Facilitate a community of practice to address the challenges of teaching PIN students,
Liaise with the Education Specialist in Portland to identify and provide professional development that is responsive to the needs to the Nanjing faculty
Coordinate and provide formative assessment observation to all faculty who request it
Support teaching quality by conducting regular faculty observations
Hold weekly meetings for faculty support and professional development
Collaborate with Portland-based Educational Specialist to support faculty teaching evaluations and interventions to maintain teaching quality
Provide coaching and training on effective use of the Learning Management System
Address faculty questions and concerns about teaching practices
Advise faculty on navigating academic integrity violations, attendance issues, and other such issues
Support student-faculty interactions by proactively encouraging open communication, as well as arranging and moderating conversations around classroom issues with faculty and students.
Serve as a cultural liaison between PIN faculty, students, and staff by upholding and interpreting Western academic values to stakeholders
Engage with NJUPT student affairs personnel to build an understanding of the academic culture of PSU and the expectations of learners and instructors
Be an accessible resource to students seeking clarity on faculty expectations and PSU academic culture
Facilitate PSU processes for resolving issues related to conduct and student complaints
Teaching and Learning Center Oversight, Coordination and Training
Develop and manage a Nanjing-based Teaching and Learning Center to provide high quality student and faculty support through the hiring and training of student mentors, graders, and teaching assistants.
Facilitate lecture series, industry talks, capstone presentations, and additional workshops for students and faculty, as needed.
Support the development of English-focused activities for students, such as conversation corners, game-nights, and other language and community building activities.
Supervise and train teaching assistants, mentors and graders in the Nanjing-based Teaching and Learning Center.
Program Support
Work with PIN Teaching Secretary at NJUPT to develop course schedules for each academic period
Assist students in the PSU registration process to establish ODIN identities and gain access to Canvas and other key PSU resources
Provide Canvas support and troubleshooting for faculty and students
Work with the international program team on matters related to the teaching and learning
Participate in the collection and organization of materials for Ministry of Education review by collecting and archiving course packages at the end of each semester
Represent Portland State University in partnership activity
Assist in curriculum revisions for General Education and Engineering courses in the Portland Institute as neededSupport General Education and Engineering courses for NJUPT-PSU Joint Institute as needed
Support regular course registration and retake course registration
Develop midterm and final exam schedule, prepare exam paper, and arrange proctors for faculty
Maintain student grade records, assist in inputting grades in NJUPT grade system, and support faculty in communication of grades
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree in TESOL, Education, or related field and 1-3 years of related experience
Experience with instruction in an international context
Experience with faculty support and development
Significant lived experience in Western and Chinese contexts
Fluent in English and Chinese
Due to administrative constraints, the Institute does not intend to sponsor for a Z visa
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with STEM learners.
Experience working with English language learners.
