Job Description

I. About XMU

Xiamen University (XMU), founded in 1921 by renowned patriotic overseas Chinese leader Mr. Tan Kah Kee, is a leading university on China’s “211 Project” and “985 Project”, which have been launched by the Chinese government to support selected universities in achieving world-class standing. In 2017, XMU was included in the nation’s list of Category A universities for development into world-class institutions. XMU boasts a full spectrum of academic programs in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering, technology, management, arts and medicine XMU ranks among the ESI’s global top 1% in 18 subjects. In 2017, XMU’s academic programs in Chemistry, Marine Science, Biology, Ecology and Statistics were included in China’s list of programs for support to attain world-class status.

XMU currently has over 200 research institutes, including two national collaborative innovation centers (with XMU playing a leading role), four national key laboratories, one national engineering technology research center, one national engineering laboratory, two national-regional joint engineering research centers, three national-regional joint engineering laboratories, one national research institute, and one national industry-academia integrated innovation platform, one national field science observation and research station, five key laboratories of the Ministry of Education (MOF), three MOF engineering research centers, one MOF field science observation and research station, and five MOF key research bases in the humanities and social sciences.

XMU was one of the first institutions to obtain approvals from national authorities to set up postdoctoral programs. At present, XMU has 32 postdoctoral programs whose cooperative supervisor teams comprise academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), senior professors in liberal arts, chief scientists of national key R&D projects, distinguished professors on the Chang Jiang Scholars Program, and recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. Most postdoctoral fellows who have completed research at XMU have gone on to become academic leaders or key academic personnel at their respective institutions, and some have even become CAS academicians, distinguished professors on the Chang Jiang Scholars Program, chief scientists of the “973 Program”, or recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars.

III. Eligibility

Candidates must:

1. uphold the highest standards of professional and personal conduct;
2. be 35 years old or younger, and in good physical condition;
3. have received a doctoral degree from a renowned university or research institute within the past three years;
4. possess strong capabilities for research and innovation, and be passionate about research.

IV. Supportive Policy

1. Remuneration and Benefits: RMB 160,000 to 480,000 per annum (the cooperative supervisor may provide additional funding based on the postdoctoral fellow’s research capabilities and performance, and XMU will contribute to the postdoctoral fellow’s social insurance and housing provident fund);

2. Research Funding: Eligible to apply for the China Postdoctoral Science Fund, etc. (RMB 50,000 to 180,000);

3. Housing: Postdoctoral apartments on campus (central location, two bedrooms and one living room, close to a kindergarten and a supermarket);

4. Subsidies: Rental subsidies will be paid by month if the postdoctoral fellow opts for off-campus housing;

5. Children’s Schooling: The access to educational resources as XMU faculty members;
6. Academic Titles: While at XMU, postdoctoral fellows may apply for the academic title of Assistant Researcher or Special Associate Researcher; those with exceptional performance may apply for the academic title of Special Researcher under the XMU Nanqiang High-Caliber Young Researchers Program;

7. International Exchange: While at XMU, postdoctoral fellows may apply for overseas academic exchange or collaborative research;

8. Full-Time Faculty Positions: While at XMU, postdoctoral fellows may apply for full-time faculty positions. XMU regularly recruits high-achieving postdoctoral fellows to fill faculty positions.
