The Department of Portuguese of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities invites applications for the position of Associate/Assistant Professor in Portuguese (Literary Studies and Literary Translation).

The Department of Portuguese is an established and lively scholarly community that includes speakers of European, Brazilian and other varieties of Portuguese. The Department offers an undergraduate degree in Portuguese Studies concentrating on Portuguese as a Foreign Language with selected courses in Linguistics, Interpretation and Translation, Foreign Language Pedagogy, Literary Studies, History and Culture. At the undergraduate level, the Department also teaches Portuguese language within the Faculty of Law and offers elective courses in Portuguese as a foreign language to students from all faculties of the University. At the postgraduate level, the Department offers two MA programmes (the MA in Portuguese Language and Intercultural Studies, and the MA in Translation Studies (Portuguese-Chinese), as well as the PhD programmes in (i) Applied Linguistics (Portuguese) and (ii) Literary and Intercultural Studies (Portuguese).

Qualifications
Applicants must hold a PhD in Literary/Cultural/Translation Studies or in related areas with an outstanding academic and cultural performance focusing on Portuguese Studies and on the comparison between Portuguese and Chinese cultural history. Well-established reputation in literary translation Chinese-Portuguese and/or Portuguese-Chinese and a good publication record in the field of Comparative Studies (Portuguese/Chinese) is demanded, as well as prior involvement with activities promoting the knowledge of Chinese culture among speakers of Portuguese and vice-versa. Previous familiarity with institutions working for the scientific and cultural exchange between China and Portuguese-speaking countries is also valued. Applicants must show evidence of a very good knowledge of Chinese language and literature. Applicants should also have native or near-native fluency in Portuguese. A good command of English is also preferred.

The selected candidate is expected to assume duty in July 2023.

Remuneration
A taxable annual remuneration starting from MOP828,100 (approximately USD102,230) will be commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification and relevant professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% – 7% after various discretionary exemptions.
