Founded in 1931, the Department of Geography at HKU has consistently ranked among the leading geography departments worldwide. According to the 2024 QS World University Ranking, the Department is ranked 14th among the top 200 universities in the domain of geography and area studies. The Department offers an extensive array of Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral programmes, and is currently experiencing unprecedented growth. A recent initiative includes the introduction of a Master of Science programme in Geospatial Data Sciences. Our faculty members are actively engaged in a variety of research fields, emphasizing three primary themes: Geospatial Data Sciences (e.g., satellite remote sensing, geographical information science), Environmental Change & Sustainability, and Cities, Culture & Society. The Position

We now invite applications for appointment as Associate Professor (Research) in Quantitative Remote Sensing in the Department of Geography.

Duties and Responsibilities

The appointee will actively contribute to research and knowledge exchange, lead collaborative and interdisciplinary initiatives, and assume high-level service and administrative responsibilities relevant to the department’s operations and strategic development. The appointee will also teach at postgraduate levels and take on additional service and administrative duties as appropriate.

Requirements

Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in Geography or a cognate discipline with expertise in quantitative remote sensing. They should have proficiency in inversion methodology for estimating essential land variables from satellite observations and in generating global land products. Experience in exploring deep learning methods and handling Earth observation big data is required. Applicants should also have extensive research experience at the tertiary level, with a strong track record in securing reputable research grants and publications. For this appointment, at least 2-3 years of research experience as a Research Assistant Professor is highly desirable.

What We Offer

The appointment will be made on a temporary basis for one year or a two-year fixed-term basis, renewable subject to funding availability and satisfactory performance, to commence in January 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter, with the possibility of renewal. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. For a fixed-term contract, the appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totaling up to 15% of the basic salary. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
