JOB GOAL / PURPOSE:
The Director of Chinese Programs manages the daily operations and long-term planning of ISB’s Chinese Language Programs including the Dual Language Program. The Director of Chinese Programs works to ensure that:
• All Chinese programs and practices of faculty and staff support the school’s mission, vision and strategic focus areas
• Chinese language and culture are deeply infused in the curriculum and ISB community
• All students can access a high quality, developmentally appropriate, research-based language learning program
The Director of Chinese Programs will be expected to maintain school-wide responsibilities as part of the Administrative Team.
DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:
Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment
• Working collaboratively with staff, teachers, Principals, and Office of Learning to facilitate development and improvement in curriculum, instruction, and assessment for the Chinese Language Program and the Dual Language Program
• Working collaboratively with Chinese and Dual-Language teachers to ensure successful implementation of the curriculum and use of instructional materials
• Regularly observing Chinese Language and Dual-Language Chinese teachers to provide feedback on teaching and learning using ISB’s evaluation rubric
• Working with Principals and teachers on appropriate placement of students within programs
• Leading the recruitment of Chinese and Dual-Language Teachers
• Oversees the ISB community adult-learning of Chinese and the student Chinese Accelerator Programs
• Developing sound experiential learning of China and Chinese culture for students, teachers, and the community
• Lead parent education sessions and supporting parent understanding of specified program areas
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
The Director of Chinese Programs should have experience in the following areas:
• Current Advanced Degree in Chinese Language or Chinese Education Educational Leadership
• At least 3 years of successful leadership and teacher supervisory experience
• Strong understanding for moving across Chinese and Western cultural boundaries
• Deep understanding of Chinese history and culture
• An ability to work with diverse audiences and build consensus to support the International School of Beijing’s mission, vision, and strategic initiatives
• An aptitude for building and maintaining positive relationships with students, educators, and parents
• Experience with curriculum development and collaboration across school sections and within an all-school context
• A demonstrated ability in leading groups and implementing curricular initiatives within a professional learning community
• Backwards design unit development, curriculum mapping, and effective assessment practices
• The capacity to organize and deliver effective presentations to diverse audiences
• Superior organizational strategies and an aptitude for solving problems
• A sound understanding of child development and developmentally appropriate practice
• Strong knowledge of research-based pedagogy and assessment and awareness of adult learning theory
