Scope of Responsibility: 
The English Language Acquisition Teacher is responsible for teaching Language Acquisition courses in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, guiding students through their language learning journey. This role focuses on helping students develop the language skills necessary for intercultural understanding, global awareness, and effective communication. The teacher will foster an engaging learning environment supporting language development and critical thinking.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Instructional Delivery:
Teach IBDP Language Acquisition courses based on the IB curriculum framework.
Develop students’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing proficiency, emphasizing real-world communication and cultural understanding.
Implement inquiry-based, student-centered learning experiences encouraging language use in authentic contexts.
Prepare students for internal and external assessments, including Paper 1, Paper 2, and the Individual Oral (IO) exams.
Curriculum Development:
Plan and design engaging, differentiated lesson plans that meet IB standards and promote the Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills.
Incorporate a variety of instructional resources and strategies, including technology, to enhance language acquisition and intercultural awareness.
Collaborate with colleagues to ensure interdisciplinary integration and alignment with IB pedagogy.
Assessment and Feedback:
Regularly assess students’ progress and provide timely, constructive feedback to improve language proficiency.
Track and document students’ development, ensuring alignment with IB Language Acquisition assessment criteria and standards.
Prepare students for the IBDP Language Acquisition assessments and ensure they understand IB assessment expectations.
Professional Development:
Engage in continuous professional learning, including IB training, and stay current with the latest language teaching and acquisition methodologies developments.
Attend and participate in school-wide and IB-specific professional development sessions, sharing best practices with colleagues.
Student Support and Mentorship:
Create a supportive, inclusive learning environment that encourages risk-taking in language learning.
Provide additional support and guidance to students, helping them build confidence and fluency in the target language.
Act as an Extended Essay (EE) supervisor for students, where appropriate, guiding them through the research and writing process.
Collaboration and Community Engagement:
Work closely with the IBDP Coordinator, other faculty members, and staff to promote interdisciplinary learning and ensure students’ language needs are met.
Communicate regularly with parents and guardians, providing updates on student progress, challenges, and successes.
Promote intercultural understanding by integrating relevant cultural experiences and perspectives into the curriculum.
Qualifications Required:
Bachelor’s degree in the target language (e.g., English, French, Spanish, Mandarin) or a related field (master’s degree preferred).
Teaching certification and qualification to teach at the secondary level.
Experience teaching in the IB Diploma Program or familiarity with the IB Language Acquisition curriculum and standards.
Proficiency in the target language and knowledge of effective language acquisition strategies.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to foster enthusiasm for language learning.
Preferred Qualifications:
IB Language Acquisition Category 1 or 2 training.
Experience teaching in an international or multicultural school setting.
Familiarity with digital tools and technology-enhanced language teaching strategies.
