III. Introduction to School of Chemical Engineering and Technology, Tianjin University
TJUSCET
Tianjin University’s chemical engineering discipline boasts a long and distinguished history, tracing its roots back to the Industrial Chemistry Lecture Hall established at its predecessor, Peiyang University, in the 1920s. In 1952, following a nationwide reorganization of higher education institutions, the chemical engineering departments of seven universities merged into Tianjin University’s Department of Chemical Engineering.
The discipline is among China’s first national first-tier key disciplines and a “Double First-Class” construction discipline. It has ranked first in all five rounds of China’s national discipline assessments, earned the highest-level accreditation from the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) three times, and won the National Teaching Achievement Award (First Prize) six consecutive times—the only institution in China to achieve this distinction. In the 2024 QS World University Rankings by Subject, Tianjin University’s chemical engineering program ranked 28th globally, while the ShanghaiRanking (ARWU) placed it second worldwide.
Guided by the principle of “pursuing first-class standards, cultivating first-class talent, achieving first-class research, and making first-class contributions,” generations of scholars have built Tianjin University’s chemical engineering discipline into a global leader. Today, it continues to attract and nurture top-tier faculty, drive industrial advancements, pioneer higher education reforms, and educate the next generation of world-class chemical engineers.
1. Cultivating Future Leaders in Chemical Engineering
Rooted in the mission of “fostering virtue through education,” the discipline emphasizes patriotism, global perspective, innovation, and hands-on competence, ensuring students’ well-rounded development in moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetic, and labor education.
As the leading institution in China’s chemical engineering education, it has secured the National Teaching Achievement Award (First Prize) six times. It spearheads the “New Engineering Education” reform, establishing a pioneering training model for top-notch innovative talents in chemical engineering.
The discipline co-founded the China Undergraduate Chem-E-Car Competition, and Tianjin University’s student chapter has won the AIChE Outstanding Student Chapter Award (Global) four times. Students have also excelled in prestigious competitions such as the “Challenge Cup” and “China ‘Internet+’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition.”
2. Advancing Scientific Innovation Aligned with National Strategies
The discipline dominates mass transfer and separation technologies, particularly in distillation and crystallization, while leading in frontier areas such as:
– Green chemical processes
– Advanced catalytic materials
– Energy and resource utilization
We building 26 national and provincial teaching and research bases. The “Tianjin Collaborative Innovation Center for Chemical Science and Technology” was among China’s first 14 “2011 Plan” Collaborative Innovation Centers.
3. Global Engagement & International Collaboration
The discipline has been certified by the IChemE at the highest level, becoming the first discipline in China’s chemical industry to pass the international professional certification. IChemE Certification Committee’s three-term chairman praised Tianjin University’s chemical engineering for “leading the reform of China’s chemical education and being one of the chemical engineering in the world”. The discipline actively explores and promotes the enrollment and training of foreign students, serving the country’s “Belt and Road” construction, recruiting 500 international students from 57 countries on six continents, and forming a distinctive international training model. In the past five years, it has held 23 international, established cooperation with famous universities such as the University of Edinburgh and international companies such as Clariant and AstraZeneca, signed more than 20 international cooperation agreements at school and department level, and established 9 international joint bases (centers).
Tianjin University’s School of Chemical Engineering and Technology is committed to excellence in education, innovation, and global collaboration, shaping the future of chemical engineering worldwide.
