The Department of English of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) invites applications for the position of Full/Associate Professor of English Literature, ideally specialising in culture and the environment. Candidates with very strong publication records in other areas may also be considered. Candidates should be prepared to supervise students at both MA and PhD levels, teach both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in English Literature, and develop and offer courses for the General Education programme.

The Department of English is an established and distinguished multinational, scholarly community. The Department offers an undergraduate degree in English Studies (focusing simultaneously on literary studies and linguistics), as well as elective courses in translation studies. At the graduate level the Department hosts two MA programmes in (i) English Studies and (ii) Translation, and offers courses in the University-level MSc in Data Science. The Department offers PhD degrees in either (a) Literary Studies or (b) Linguistics. The Department also contributes courses to the General Education programme. The literature section teaches widely, covering all post-medieval historical periods (and earlier periods in translation) with particular strengths in the Gothic, Theory, and Holocaust Studies.

Qualifications

The successful candidate should have a PhD in English Literature or related areas, teaching experience at the tertiary level, and a record of research publication appropriate to the rank of Full/Associate Professor. Applicants should be able to demonstrate competence in teaching, an outstanding publication record, and a willingness to provide service to the University and the English Department. Candidates with quality research publications and teaching experience in culture and the environment are particularly welcome.

The selected candidate is expected to assume duty in August 2023.

Remuneration

A taxable annual remuneration starting from MOP1,019,200 (approximately USD125,830) will be commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification and relevant professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% – 7% after various discretionary exemptions.
