Job Description

Applications are invited for appointment as Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Music in the School of Humanities (Music) (Ref.: 519550), to commence on August 1, 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.  Appointment will be made on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and with consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract.

Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree or equivalent in Music. To maintain its position as a top destination for music research in Hong Kong, the Department of Music wishes to appoint a candidate who can address the challenges arising from the impact of digital technologies, particularly AI, on musical practice. The appointee will be a scholar whose research, creative output, and teaching reframe the digital in the context of a broadly humanistic curriculum. Applicants must demonstrate expertise in digital technologies and an engagement with the music industry. Candidates with a secondary area are encouraged to highlight their additional strengths.

The appointee is expected to develop a vigorous, independent research programme, to excel in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and to handle the usual non-teaching duties. They will develop and teach courses in at least one of the following areas: digital musicology, AI-generated music, interactive sound processing and installation, sound and immersive technologies and, game music, and to contribute to the Faculty’s newly established Bachelor of Arts in Humanities and Digital Technologies Programme.  Total teaching load will be three to four courses per year for each position, including introductory first-year courses. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, together with contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme at 15% of basic salary.
