Job Description

College Introduction

Since its founding in 2009, the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS) in Nanjing University has been pursuing to fulfill its original vision: science-based and engineering-oriented education. We seek an optimal balance between the creation and integration of knowledge through scholarly research, entrepreneurship and innovation in translating the products of our research into practice, and the dissemination of knowledge to our students on the Nanjing University campus and beyond. Since 2019, a new 65,000 m2 building for research and education has been put into use to house the academic departments and research centers, embodying CEAS’s global vision and forward-looking plan. CEAS is now aimed to become a world-class college with its research and education focusing on developing cutting-edge technologies and engineering solutions to tackle major societal challenges.

In 2017, materials science and engineering in CEAS was listed as the national first-class discipline. After faculty recruitment and infrastructure expansion, CEAS is poised for significant growth and a rise to a higher standard of excellence. The college won the first prize of the National Natural Science Award once and the second prize three times. It is also a nationwide exemplary college, where internationalization is being implemented in every facet (education, research, administration, faculty recruiting/assessment, and infrastructure), and involves virtually every member of the college (administrators, faculty, staff and students). The college has established several new R&D institutions and achievement transformation platforms in Nanjing, Suzhou, Shanghai and other places. It has also formed long-term partnerships with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the University of California, Irvine, and Paris Tech, etc., and has hosted/participated in a number of international cooperation projects.

At present, CEAS faculty is composed of 91 professors/associate professors, including 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Over the recent years, near 40 junior faculty members (including 3 non-Chinese nationals) have been recruited from world-renowned universities or institutions, primarily through national talents recruiting programs.

1. Positions description

We now have several (up to 7) tenure-track assistant professor positions open. Areas of specific interests include:

(1) Functional Crystal Materials

Focused on new concept crystals, nonlinear optical crystals and other new functional crystalline materials and their applications; studying their growth mechanisms, preparation techniques and physical properties; developing the design and preparation of novel crystals, as well as their manipulation theories and techniques; exploring new physical properties and applications in state-of-art spintronic devices and novel optoelectronic devices.

(2) Material design and metamaterials

Exploring design and simulation principles for novel digital topological materials; developing digital methods and technology for topological materials, e.g., topological twin building and artificial intelligence; establishing topological materials database; shaping a paradigm for metamaterials featured by micro-structure, to satisfy national materials demands on fabrication, information, and energy in the future.

(3) Efficient solar thermal conversion materials and applications:

Carrying out interdisciplinary research on optics, chemistry, and materials of solar energy, including exploring the mechanism and key materials design of solar, thermal, and electrical energy conversion, developing a new generation of devices for renewable clean energy conversion and utilization.

(4) Functional medicinal nanomaterials:

Designing and fabricating next generation micro- and nano-scale biomedical materials and devices which go beyond simple drug release to interact with and regulate biochemistry at multiple levels from molecules, cells, and tissues to whole organisms

(5) Micro/nano photonic integration

Carrying out frontier research and technical innovation in the field of micro/nano photonic integration, such as novel optical design and theory (including micro/nano photonics, topological photonics, cavity electrodynamics, etc.), advanced micro/nano-fabrication techniques, multi-functional integrated photonic devices, and photon-based classic and quantum information processing.

(6) Soft matter Photonics

Based on the material design and micro structure fabrication of self-assembled soft matter, studying on the mechanism and laws of novel physical effects, developing a new generation of soft matter based photonic devices, and promoting the cutting-edge research intersecting with materials science, physics, chemistry and life science.

(7) Optical fiber sensing and signal processing

Carrying out cutting edge research in next-generation optical fiber technologies (e.g. fabrication process, components and devices, signal transmission, multiplexing mand detection). Promoting the advancement of optical fiber technologies for not only intelligent perception but precision machining, communication, medical health applications.
